FOIL stands for “First, Outer, Inner, Last

It is the sum of:

  • multiplying the First terms,
  • multiplying the Outer terms,
  • multiplying the Inner terms, and
  • multiplying the Last terms.

Examples

(a+b)(c+d) = ac + ad + bc + bd

(a-b)(c-d) = ac – ad – bc + bd
