Basic Math Operations

In basic mathematics, there are many ways of saying the same thing:

SymbolDefinitions
+Addition, Add, Increase, Plus, Sum, Total
Decrease, Deduct, Difference, Less, Minus, Subtraction, Subtract, Take Away
×Multiplication, Multiply, Times, Product, By, Lots Of
÷Division, Divide, Goes Into, How Many Times, Quotient

Addition

Addition is bringing two or more numbers (or things) together to make a new total. The numbers to be added together are called the “Addends”:

Example

4 + 7 = 11

where:

4 and 7 are called addends

11 is called Sum

Subtraction

Subtraction is taking one number away from another. In subtraction, there are 3 words to remember.

Minuend :The number that is to be subtracted from.

Subtrahend :The number that is to be subtracted.

Difference : The result of subtracting one number from another.

So, subtraction is

Minuend − Subtrahend = Difference

Example

7 – 4 = 3

where:

7 is the minuend

4 is the subtrahend

3 is the difference

Multiplication

Multiplication is repeated addition.

Example

4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 (seven 4s) make 28

4 x 7 = 28

It can also be said that 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 (four 7s) make 28

Division

Division is splitting into equal parts or groups. It is the result of fair sharing.

Division has special words to remember.

Example

Let’s take the simple question of 7 divided by 4. The answer is 1, with 3 left over.

7 ÷ 4 = 1 R 3

where:

7 is the dividend

4 is the divisor

1 is the quotient

3 is the remainder

Fraction

A Fraction is part of a whole. Fraction has 2 parts, they are numerator (top) and denominator (bottom).

The numerator says how many parts we have.

The denominator says how many parts the whole is divided into.

Example

4/7

where:

4 is the numerator

7 is the denominator

Decimal

A Decimal Number is a number that contains a Decimal Point.

Example

12.345

where:

1: tens

2: ones

Symbol “.” is the decimal point

3: tenths

4: hundreds

5: thousands

Percentage

A is parts per 100. The symbol of percentage is %

Example

45% means 45 per 100

Average (Mean)

Average is the sum divided by the count.

How to find average?

  • adding up all the values
  • divide by how many values
Example

What is the average of 1, 2, 3, and 4?

Step 1 : 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10

Step 2 : 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5

So the average is 2.5
